SEO vs AEO: What’s the Difference

Why We Waited to Talk About It

There’s a new acronym doing the rounds in marketing circles, and like most new acronyms, half the internet is using it to sell you something vague and expensive. So let’s clear it up properly.

SEO, Quickly

Search Engine Optimisation is about getting your website to rank well on Google. You’ve probably heard this one a thousand times: good content, fast site, decent backlinks, the right keywords in the right places. Nothing new here.

AEO, in Plain English

AEO, or AI Engine Optimisation, is the same idea but for a different audience. Instead of optimising so Google ranks you on a results page, you’re optimising so ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google’s AI Mode actually mention your business when someone asks a question.

Here’s the thing though. AEO isn’t some separate universe. It leans heavily on your SEO already being solid, because these AI tools are still mostly pulling their answers from sites that already rank well in normal search. If your SEO’s shaky, your AEO was dead before it started.

So think of it less as “SEO vs AEO” and more as “SEO, plus a few extra requirements on top.”

What Are Those Extra Requirements?

This is where it gets more specific than most explanations you’ll find online. In plain terms, AI tools want to be confident about three things before they’ll mention you:

1. You’re a real, verifiable business. This means structured data (a bit of behind-the-scenes code) that clearly states who you are, plus links connecting your website to your LinkedIn, socials, and other verified profiles. Without this, AI tools genuinely can’t be sure you’re not a copycat or a coincidence of a similar name.

2. Someone real wrote your content. An author byline matters more than people think. Content with no named author is treated as lower trust, both by Google and by AI tools deciding who to cite.

3. Your content is easy to lift and quote. FAQ sections, clear headings, and direct answers to likely questions are AI catnip. Long rambling paragraphs are much harder for an AI tool to extract a clean answer from, so they’ll often just skip you and cite someone else instead.

None of this is complicated once you know it exists. Most businesses simply haven’t been told any of it yet.

Why We Waited

We’ve been talking about AEO internally for months. What we didn’t want to do was slap a made-up “AI score” onto a report and call it a day. Vague scores with no real measurement behind them are exactly the kind of agency fluff we’ve built Web8 to avoid.

So we built our own measurement dashboard instead. It checks your actual visibility across all four major AI platforms, alongside the SEO foundations sitting underneath it, and shows you precisely where the gaps are and how to fix them.

We wanted to be as transparent about AI visibility as we’ve always been about SEO. No guesswork, no smoke and mirrors, just a proper report showing the good, the bad, and the bits worth fixing.
