We turn to the internet for everything. From selling to buying to finding love, a movie. Now more than ever internet usage is increasing at unheard of speed. So many people still at home. As the economy shrinks crime generally increases, not a great thought but it is a reality. Online security has become a necessity.
Undoubtedly, Google loves its users and therefore, is coming up with every possible way to make us feel secure here on the internet. Since 2017 Google started flagging all the unencrypted internet this is approximately 58% to 64% of the web (depends on who you talk to). This means if your website doesn’t have an SSL certificate, it will display a ‘Not Secure’ in the URL bar. If you are hosting with Web8 this is included with your website and email hosting. This is what your visitor may see!
Do you need to worry?
If you answer yes to either of these two questions then the answer is YES!
- Does your website look like this HTTP://?
- Do you need any text inputs on your site? This could be a search function, logins, contact forms, questionaires?
How Does the SSL Certificate Work?
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and is the standard technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server (your website) and a browser (your potential client). This SSL link means the data sent between your website and the browser remain unchanged and private. Without this SSL a secure connection can not be established. You increase the risk of hacking and other cyber-criminal activity. Here is a simple image to show how this works
So why should you do this?
Builds Trust and Brand
When your site is certified your customers see visuals like a padlock and green address that shows your site is encrypted. Today people are very aware of cybersecurity and as such, they may well move on if your site is not showing as encrypted.
Protection from Cyber Criminals
These guys are smart, without an SSL certificate you face many risks:
- Site being hacked. You may need to rebuild your site and lose google ranking that you have invested in
- Client Data being taken. The damage to trust and brand can be immense.
By using SSL Certification then you can prevent other computers between your website and your visitor seeing and taking sensitive information. When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to.
Search Engine Ranking
Google and other search engines now rank SSL Certified sites above those that are not. So if you are not offering and SSL certified site and your competitors are then they may well be ranking above you
